Blackening pepper leafs and stems?

Logan_USX

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking on this forum for a couple weeks now and I've been able to answer some of my worries from the posts that I have read, so thanks for that.

I do, however, have a couple plants left that I was hoping for some suggestions with.

I have 3 Red Ghost peppers with blackening leaves like this.

And my yellow scorpions are developing black stems and/or black spots where the leafs connect to the stems

And, I believe that this is sunscald but it may not be. I definitely have scalded some of my pepper plants as I am using a reflective sheet around them under a 400W HPS lamp (currently at 50% power).

Sorry, I couldn't get all the pictures to embed correctly.

Thank you for your comments in advance,
Logan

Logan, can you try re-uploading those photos again, or using a different service? I am met with an error when trying to view your photos.

Does it resemble the darkening of this by any chance? If so it's nutrient deficiency, and needs to be fed.

Logan the plants, I would not worry about the darken stems as that's normal with indoor growing, they grow out of it or keep some at the nodes when outside. I am not sure if the yellowing is from taking the pic around what looks like foil or if they are yellow colored leaves. If they are yellow make sure you are not overwatering.

Here is an example of the purple color on one of my plants

So I need not worry about the blackening stems, awesome.

Yeah, some of my leaves have been turning yellow so I started spraying the underside of those leaves with an epsom salt (magnesium) mixture.

I was over-watering when I started these plants but have cut down now to watering just a little (say 5 to 10mL) every other day. Would you suggest that I water every third day instead? Or to use the "wait for wilt" method of watering?

ab2008: In your photo, I see a bit of blackening on the right most leaf, but mine looks much more severe. I'll take another photo of it right now for uploading. What nutrient should I supplement with to prevent this?

And do you believe this to be sunscald?

Thanks ab2008 and Mark for your time thus far.

    Logan,

From what I understand that coloration in the first couple of photos, (this is just what I've read, and what I've experienced with my own) was nitrogen/phosphorus deficiency. So i think anything like a 10-10-10 would help. However I'm no hot pepper expert, and I'm sure Mark or someone else could probably provide you better information than I could.

Take what I say with a grain of salt lol. I'm just passing on what I've seen in other posts and images with something similar (as well as my habanero I have in a hydroponic setup at the moment.)

In the last, I can't be sure to be honest. I had some that were sunburned but they looked different. I'll attach a picture to this so you can see what sunburn looks like. Notice how it's almost a bright white at first. Yours looks more like a burn. Have you happened to been giving that plant specifically any types of fertilizer? Or had too close to a light perhaps? While fluorescents don't put off too much heat, right against the light can burn them if I'm not mistaken. Mark or someone else with more experience could probably chime in and let you know for sure though. I'd like to hear what they say.

The same Favia plant 2 weeks later after transplanting and light watering. While it'll keep the sunburn, the plant will pull through just fine if it's sunburn. Hope ya find out what the culprit is in your pics though!

Logan, these are the steps I would take. Stop the Epsom salt spray, let the soil dry out, and then water with light fertilizer. To make sure the soil is dry use a chopstick or tooth pick and stick it in the soil and when you pull it out if its damp wait a day or two. You could also wait until the leaves droop/wilt then water with light fertilizer. When you repot consider either adding more perlite or bark to your mix as this helps tremendously. Key is to not over care for them. You can also from the time you water count the days until they wilt then water them then that's the numbers of days to let go by before watering again. Keep us updated on how your plants do over the next week or two.
