When you moved them away from a direct light source they are reaching for the light. The term we use is spindly, if you let them go too long this way they eventually need support or they just fall over. They seem to grow slower but I would keep them under the grow lights and not cause them to reach for the source too much.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah I wasn't going to let them go too long, but I have more seed trays than I have light and wanted to get a tray of cabbage and stuff get a little light since a few started to sprout. It's definitely nice to see them get another inch or two in on them, though. They are definitely coming along quite nice.

They did Bruce. I was afraid I may have put a little too much composted cow manure into my mix, but they seem to be doing quite well so far!

Many plants need periods of darkness for optimal growth. They are a bit like us in that regard. During they day they put all of their effort into photosynthesis (eating), but its during the night when they switch over to being more focused on growth.

Don't leave them under lights 24/7. 16 hours of light, 8 hours of dark is what I generally do. My lights are on timers (you can get plug strips with timers built into them at Walmart now, turn entire banks of lights on and off automatically), on at 7 in the morning, off at 11 at night.
