Yea, they're definitely a little closer than I'd like, but I'm limited to just 2 beds this year and have 20 plants to go out. Next year I'm going to limit it to 8 plants per bed and maybe try the grow bag and kiddy pool method for some extra space.

They look very vigorous.

On the spacing, i believe there are 2 considerations:

1) Root spacing: To provide enough soil volume to each plant.
2) Top growth elbow room. and gardeners' convenience factor.

I would think that at the shown spacing , the plants should have more than necessary soil volume.
As far as the top space is concerned, it would depend on the variety , their grow habit and season length. And actually, tight planting may offer and advantage in providing shade, keeping soil cooler and conserving water.
