Better than nothing. But why not the whole area???

The heat from the bare areas will just radiate to the root area. Not to mention the evaporation. See all the water OUTSIDE of the rings? That will dry up in no time at all.

Yeah, I know the whole area would be better. We live right up against the foothills and occasionally get fires and the wife is scared to death of wood chips or mulch for ignition reasons.
It's more of a phobia on her part I guess. I'll just have to water more often.

You also want to make sure the mulch is not touching the bases of the plants or you could get rot.

DW is worried about some mulch when there's a cedar fence right there? That sucker would go up like a Roman Candle... ;-)

Going to get some bird netting around that Pequin. Pods are forming and the
mocking birds love them.
