New pH question

So I got a pH meter, a bag of dolomite lime, and sulfur. While pH adjusting I noticed the results were not instantaneous. Doing research I found that both the lime and the sulfur need microbes to break them down and the waist product is actually what adjusts the pH. This is a problem for container growers like me who use soilless microbe-less soil. Are container growers waisting their time and money trying to pH adjust? If you don't have microbes the stuff doesn't work.
