If they have only been flowering for a few weeks the peppers won't have had time to size-up yet. Patience.

So they will likely get fatter with time? How long does it typically take a jalepeno to be "ready" without letting it get fully ripened?

When I'm not sure of when to pick a green pepper, I wait until the first ones start to turn, and pick all the others that are the same age. Some varieties will develop corking (brown bands that usually start around the shoulders), I'd say they're ready at that point. I'll also note that I haven't ever grown jalapenos myself, so there may be a more specific answer out there.

Thanks tsheets! It's my first year growing peppers for a small farmers market- and ordinarily I wouldn't care about the size. But i know people have "expectations" based on what they are used to at the grocery store.

If anyone does peppers on a somewhat larger scale and has some advice I will GLADLY take it! I've got around 200 plants consisting of:
Jalepeno
Serrano
Habanero
Hatch medium (big Jim)
Hatch mild (new Mexico)
Thai long sweet
Jimmy nardellos
Shishito
Italian pepperoncini
Golden Marconi
Quadrato di Asti Rosso & giallo
Orange bell

Always grown peppers, but I'm sure there is a much greater science to it than what I know!

Katydid: Jalapenos at the grocery store are almost always a larger(mammoth, giant, etc) variety than a standard m variety. 2-3 inches is about right. Very prolific though and have a decent heat level for Jalapenos.

Concur: Three inches is about right for Jalapeno M. It is not an extra large jalapeno. Has a little more bite than your average jalapeno. That variety will "cork" as it approaches full size. If you have full size healthy plants they should size up nicely.
