June Padrons and overwintering ideas

Tiarella

During the 2 months of waiting for the first peppers, I've been planning to overwinter at least these 6 padrons and the Big Jim at the end to avoid the long wait next year. I have 14 other peppers in pots and may overwinter any that turn out to be favorites.

My concern is bringing in pests when I overwinter. Last time I overwintered, I found a small snake in the basement. There are a few other remote possibilities for how the snake got in but coming in with the plants is the most probable. Also, when emptying up last years pots this spring, I found 2 pots full of ants and ant eggs, and then I mulched the pots with pea gravel contaminated with roly poly bugs. It's rained a lot this spring and the roly poly bugs have thrived.

I've read various ways to kill ants, and I'll look for ways to get rid of roly pollies, and I plan to set the pots in a tub of water to flush out any snakes before bringing in the pots. I'll also spray off the foliage for little pests.

Any more ideas?
