My suggestion is, and this is what I have done every year is to pull the plants in the fall, fully wash off the soil from the root system and replant in a fresh medium. At the same time, you will likely get rid of or notice any pests on the plant itself. You can rinse the top half of the plant at this time as well as the roots. As long as you are using clean, fresh soil, your chances of bringing in any soil born insects or "snakes" is very minimal and an any foliage insects will likely be removed during the process as well.
I just never worried too much about bringing in pests and the only problem I have had is Aphids. But I think they infested the plants AFTER I brought them in.
There are several threads dealing with soils for overwintering peppers. I think one is a "Gritty Mix". Just do a search for Gritty Mix or Over winter pepper soil and you will get some good info. Personally, I just use a pine bark mix that is lighter in the bark part.

Thanks for the good idea. I hadn't worried about pests before except the bugs that attack foliage. I had a bad infestation one winter.

Exactly what Bruce said. That's what I do. Bare root and trim the roots and the top way back and plant them in fresh mix in a 1gal max pot to minimize the bugs I bring in. Been there!! It's more work that way, but, well worth it, IMO!

How often and how much do you water after barerooting and planting in a grit or stone mix?

In previous years, I've limbed up the plants, cut each remaining branch back by two-thirds, placed near a basement window, and watered once a week with a glass of water. They dropped most of their leaves, but the branches stayed green, and the plants were large at the start of spring.
