The right thing to do would be to get your soil tested, this way you can add the products you truly need. Otherwise a quick, cheap & easy would be to pick up some espoma tomato-tone at lowes/home depot.

And or you can scratch some dried cow manure compost, the non-smelly stuff, into the top inch of soil. After seeing the magic it works with container peppers, you realize you can never have too much of it. It may have a feint smell when you first open the bag, but out in the open it disappears right away and never smells offensive.

In the fall you can rake a 6" to 12" layer of mixed leaves into your bed, you only have to avoid leaves from walnut trees. Then plow it under in the early spring. This benefits your soil and plants a lot of different ways.

You could amend your soil with good quality worm castings.

I use black kow manure worm castings and cotton burr compost in the top 3" of my ground peppers and it works wonders for them.
