Cause for peppers drying out??

Hi there,

This a great place to get and to share information about our precious peppers.

This time I got a "Basket of Fire" pepper plant that is producing a lot.

Yesterday and today I noticed that two healthy peppers have been drying out, I'm not sure about the cause, I'd like some help please.

I'm worried about the watering frequency and amount of it, because the basket doesn't have any drainage hole, I just water it and there is no water dripping so I'm not sure if the roots are swimming in the water or are too dry.

Last time watered it was June 12, I used 1 liter (33oz) for a 8.5 liter (2.24 gallons) basket.

Last time I fertilize it was June 10, using 30ml (2tbsp) of a "5-6-8+calcium" fertilizer.

Any suggestions?

my suggestion is add a drain hole in the bottom of the pot. peppers don't like being wet.

Judo_and_Peppers is right about watering and drainage, cut a few good holes on the bottom, and maybe a couple on the bottom sides. Poke a finger in afterwards to see if the soil is sopping wet.

I've also seen pepper pods do that when the plant is heavily infested with bad bacteria, but the peppers would be mushy and filled with water at the bottom tips. Your leaves look bacteria-free to me, so i doubt you're having that problem.

The plant looks great otherwise. You may get a few more bad peppers, but the problem should clear up soon afterwards.

Looks quite a bit like blossom end rot to me. This is caused by both large fluctuation in moisture and/or a calcium deficiency. As far as the drainage holes That is very important and I agree you should make some ASAP.

I was thinking blossom end rot (BER) as well. It's more common on early season fruit in my experience, but, can happen any time. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if it is related to the lack of drain holes.

Certainly looks like BER. Have you checked the Ph of your growing medium?

Thanks everyone, I certainly will cut some holes to drain water.

Willard3: I havent checked PH, Ill try to look for one at my garden centre the next time I go.

As today, I havent found any more pepper like that.

BER is frustrating because, as tsheets stated, it effects your fruit early which is generally when I (and many others) are excited to see the pods at their best them WHAM BER takes out your nicest pod... I alwys tell myself to add gypsum during the transplant (this adds calcium to the soil without making the soil to alkaline) and never do.. got one tomato with BER so far and no peppers... here's hoping.
