Bleh...pepper breeding.

Well, my "Crunch Sweet Orange" (one of 3 pepper breeding experiments I've tried over the years and the only one I currently still breed) is STILL showing 3-lobed fruits (from the cross with the Romanian sweet pepper which looked like a squat-bell pepper).

Granted, almost all the fruits are 2-lobed, but I'm seeing 2-3 out of 20-ish on each plant in bloom that are still 3-lobed.

I hope this doesn't continue to show up at a nearly 10% rate. I only pulled 1-2 off each plant, total, last grow out.

The taste isn't affected, but they tend to be smaller in size than the 2-lobed fruits and more prone to cracking or otherwise opening themselves up to internal bug invasions.

Either way, the plants are doing everything else I want them to and unless the fully ripe taste is "off" I'm still planning on passing out seed this winter.

Yes...they're very boring and pretty much all look similar (except size/vigor). There was color variation that was rogued out early because only the oranges had the most vigorous traits.

This is an informal thing I've been doing. The "seed release" is more to get out in the open what I've got more than trying to create a pepper revolution or marketing the thing for money.

The lobing has been a bit of a pest trait that I thought was going away. Granted it's not like 1/4 or 1/2 the plant is 3-lobed, but I'd rather not see any.

Bleh...the lobing issue not getting better with steady weather. It looks like each plant is going to produce 3-4+ this year which is a step backwards on that trait.

Still, fruit quality and thickness is high. Vigor and fruit set are high. Ripening time is better than last year for some reason...either bad luck or weather related factors held thing back last year, or I had incredible luck with my seed selection.

I'm tired of playing with it. If anyone ever stabilizes a predictable 2-lobed fruit plant rather than getting a selection of 2 and 3-lobed fruits out of this seed line...good for them.

Either way something decent has come out of it on the home garden side of things for people who want a fruity/sweet pepper that's got thick walls, but isn't huge.
