Peppers With No Blooms?

Posted by skyclad 6 (My Page) on

I have grown hot chile peppers for years, but this is the first time I've ever had any plants with absolutely no blooms. They are probably threeFourths grown at this point, with huge dark green leaves and otherwise look like great plants..........just no flowering blooms anywhere! Luckily, it is a limited problem and all my other peppers are doing fine.. I first noticed this on the two Mirasol plants I have in the backyard. Any ideas on what's going on here??
Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions..

What is the sun exposure like?
Are they in containers or in the ground in the backyard?
If they the plants are dark green, I'd suspect plenty of Nitrogen....perhaps they've
been vegetating this whole time.

My guess is that when they do kick into flower production, there will be an abundance.

Any chance of a pic?

Josh

Hi Josh, and thanks for the response back..
The sun exposure is direct all day long, and they are planted in the ground. I've planted them just like all the others, but these two particular plants (both Mirasols..) simply have no blooms. Interesting point about the large amt of Nitrogen though, since for the first time ever I have been using composted horse manure on all of my plants..........and everything has been growing VERY well (including the littleLady's flowers!). I see where you're going with the point about the nitrogen though. Thanks for pointing that out. Aren't forums great?!!!
Thanks again..

Here's something you may want to consider as well.

Last year I grew bhut jolokia that I had germinated in february. I live in Texas and we had the hottest heat wave we had in a long time - 100+ degrees that started in May and ended around mid August. My bhut jolokia took around 7 months to even put out blooms. They were gorgeous healthy plants but absolutely no attempts at even blooming. They didn't decide to try to bloom until around october when the weather cooled. This year I am growing bhut jolokia as well, and we have not had a single day above 100 - in fact its been a fairly mild summer so far. I just checked my bhut jolokia that I actually germinated around april/may and its put out some stems with blooms that are starting to form! Only difference is temperature an a slightly better soil than last year.

So you may want to move your peppers to a more shaded area or an area that is not as hot and see how they do. Maybe you could do a test if you have more than one type of pepper by changing soil comp of one and leaving it direct sun and moving the other into a slightly cooler/shaded area?
