Hi all! I'm new to growing hot peppers, grown apache, bell & sweets before with no problem. This year I've bought a naga morich, chocolate jolokia and bhut jolokia. They are growing slowly, which I expected, but the leaves are going very pale. I have given them a feed, but daren't give them any more as the tips are turning brown, which I suspect as fertiliser burn? Any help appreciated! P.s. I'm in the uk, and the summer has been a washout & none existent so far. Cheers.

i agree with - tsheets - too much water with addition of fertilizer can cause paleness and leaf burn.

Can you post a pic of the plants? Would be very helpful. What are your growing in, pots or in ground?

Hi habjolokia. All my hots have just been re-potted into 6inch pots, but they still had plenty of room in the old ones. The apache and sweet peppers are in 13 litre buckets. Here is the naga morich -

Apache doing fine, lots of flowers and chillis growing, nice dark green -

Sweet pepper doing fine, but I bought the apache and sweet pepper from a garden centre, and they were quite a bit bigger than the hots.

Even my tomatoes are small compared to last year, only 3 - 4 feet. This summer in the UK has been a washout, lots of floods and lucky to get over 20 C. :-(

I'm trying to keep them dry, and bit more protected in my homemade greenhouse!

Hi tsheets & steven 1032... I think you may be correct, too much water. I have just checked with a moisture probe & it reads 9.5 out of 10 - wet! I've put them on homebrew heatpads to try and dry out the soil. See what happens... Thanks all for your advice.

A tip that I was reminded of recently is to use a wick to help drain the excess water. I used a bamboo skewer to stuff a strip of cloth up through the drain hole(s) and into the potting mix, leaving a tail sticking out the bottom of the pot. I only used 1 for small pots and 2 for larger pots. It's an easy / cheap and effective assist.

That's a brilliant idea...

some times when i have wet soil problem. i use a seaweed and fish emulshion foliar spray until it drys so the plant can keep taking up nutrients.

Will try the wick method thanks tsheets. They're still on the heat pads, but looking greener and healthier already with the soil drying out.

Just a quick follow up, thanks to Steven, habjolokia and tsheets. I think you have saved my plants! Dried them out on a heatpad and haven't watered since, they are doing much better. Read a thread about the 3 w's with chillies _ Wait, Wilt, Water... Still tempted to water when they look dry, but I've learnt to leave them be, over watering seems to do more damage than under watering. Thanks guys! Note in my picture I rescued a cayenne and a jalapeno from a garden centre today, they too are over watered, and I'm hoping I can help them! :-)

Poorly cayenne and jalapeno, re-potted them, and gonna let them dry out. Hopefully save these little guys too! ;-)

Once you get used to the water-wilt-water cycle, you should try to water just before they start wilting. Some say starving them for water a little is not only OK but makes them hotter. My thinking is that if you want hotter, then grow hotter peppers. I don't see the point in stressing a plant over and over again. Besides, the first time you don't catch the wilting in time, you will have brown crunchy leaves instead of green rubbery leaves. So, as you gain some experience, learn the cylce and water just before they start wilting. Also, don't forget to use the stick method for testing the soil. Put a small smooth stick into the soil to the bottom. Then, just pull it out and see how damp the stick is. If there is a bunch of soil particles sticking to it, the soil is still moist, if it comes out clean and dry, time to water. I use bamboo skewers. you can get a bag of about 30 for a buck at walmart or many dollar stores. There is no need to go from overwatering to the other extreme. Bruce |

Thanks Bruce, we don't have Walmart in UK, but we have plenty of Asda, owned by! :-) I think anyway? Anyway, cut the small talk, I can certainly get hold of wooden skewers and will test my soil with them. I wished I lived in the USA just for growing chillies, been on Hols to Disney Florida twice in the last 7yrs, awesome! You Americans are so welcoming n friendly! Thanks for chilli advice, if you come to UK I can recommend a good brolly and rain mac! |

hahaha, well, I was in the US Army in Germany twice and had several opportunities to work hand in hand with my British colleagues. Aside from them being very good at what they do, I remember how they ALL could drink...seemingly every one of them. I never made it across the channel to visit the big island but I would have liked to. I am not one for foreign languages and would have liked to visit a foreign country and still know more than ten words of the local language :) Good luck with the peppers, Bruce

Funny you should say that Bruce! Apart from attempting to grow extremely hot chillies, I also make extremely strong homebrew beer and cider... Ha ha, something to wash the chillies down. Rich.
