Not worth even half that effort since there are subsitute ingredients that work just as well, including other bark mulches. I would hit up the container growing forum for alternate ideas.

Also i would not strip the bark off living trees, if that is what you meant of course ;)

yes this is what I meant :P lol I asked in container forum before but I never got an alternative and there isn't a forum on here over compost or growing meduims I thought this was a wrong place but still I had to give it at least one shot in the dark

Do you have access to just regular pine bark mulch or nuggets(not fines)? if so, I've heard of people bbuying the larger nuggets, cleaning out the sapwood, thowing it in a pillow case or what have you, and then rolling over it several times with their car to break up into smaller pieces. Just a thought.

I don't think so not pine the pine is a problem here normal mulch no bother but I been from here to belfast ring around web site everything and just can't get pine anywhere nearest pine trees are approx 30 miles away they were cut down june last year and it these I going to strip of bark if it was viable

It doesn't have to be PINE. CONIFER bark is what you want. So, Fir, Spruce, Hemlock. Not sure about redwood et al.

There's a soil supplier here locally that makes their potting mix with redwood bark, so it might be ok. Ask Greenman28 or somebody over in the container forum.

perfect found some it a bit of a wack to pay all at once but it works out cheaper than a bag of soil overall

Margowicz: not sure about those 2 products.

In the 1st link, the pic shows it to be almost awesome stuff as far as size, but in the specs, it says it has 15% trunk(sapwood). If you can't pick out that sapwood easily, it may do more harm than good using it.

The 2nd pic -- looks large and appears like there's plenty of large pieces of sapwood. So, if you could ultimately pull out 95% of the sapwood and then crush the large pieces of bark to 1/2", then it MAY work.

It's a judgement call. I wouldn't buy it until you get more info from the more seasoned 5-1-1 users on GW.

I got some more it is ã6 per bag so that is worth a shot in the dark but I now know there more I can use and not just pine.

I have made some calls and the gardens centres can get most of these handy.

From the start of this I was going to compost my own to now knowing I can get it handy near me it is great now I can focus on getting seeds and starting early in new year :D
