what kind of pepper is this? edible?

I bought this plant at a farmers' market as a cherry bomb but it definitely is not. It has small whitish flowers and thin, small light to medium purple peppers. The fruit is upright and about 1 in long.
I have no idea what these are, if they are edible, or how hot they are.
Please, help!
