Bhut Jolokia Growth Timeline

Woohooo! So, my Bhut Jolokias finally started turning Red this week. It's been a long wait. I know a lot of users commonly ask questions like "how long until my pods turn red?" or "how long does it take from seed to harvest?" The answers to these questions are usually varied, but it might be helpful that I've documented several key dates that mark milestones for my plants. My plants were all started indoors in January and moved outside in April. My garden is in the northern part of zone 7.

Planted seeds = January 4th

First seeds to sprout = January 19th (15 Days)

First plant with open flowers = June 7th (154 Days)

First Green Pods = June 21st (168 Days)

First Red Ripe Pods = July 25 (202 Days)

I've documented almost all of this on video. You can check out my '2011 Garden' playlist by visiting my youtube channel;

I guess I got lucky...

Planted seeds on 3/14/11, had sprouts in about a week.

First pods appeared while we were on vacation - left 6/18 with just blooms, returned 7/4 to three plants full of fruit.

My first pod started showing signs of ripening last Friday (7/22) and by yesterday (7/27) it was almost fully ripe.

I picked it anyway since it was showing signs of BER, today we had a sampling party at work. The flavor is really good, but these puppies are officially HOT. Two guys couldn't take it and spit out their (tiny) pieces, the heat still lasted over 15 minutes.

I'm looking forward to having more ripen up soon.:)

RE: Bhut Jolokia Growth Timeline

I must ask, what in the hell do you people do with these peppers?!?

 o
RE: Bhut Jolokia Growth Timeline

Eat them!

I usually de-seed and cut into quarters (four tapered pieces, lengthwise) then freeze them, doesn't take much to really spice up a hot sauce or recipe. Pepperpot soup or stew made with Bhuts is awesome, as are chicken wings. Just go slow until you find the heat level you like!

I love hot peppers and hot sauces, but I would have to imagine that a jolokia pepper is just way to damn hot to be eating.

RE: Bhut Jolokia Growth Timeline

Harvested my first ripe Bhut yesterday. First time I tasted it, and it's amazingly good. We first tried some small pieces, and found that the heat actually wasn't all that bad, although we are quite seasoned. It was a pretty good size, about 3 inches long, 1 inch wide. My potted Bhuts are loaded with peppers (unlike in the ground). We then mixed it up with several other types of peppers, garlic and onion and made an impromptu salsa. It was amazing. Although the Bhut was only a portion, you could smell the wonderful aroma of the Bhut and it wasn't overly hot (for out tastes).

This is our first year growing superhots, and the Bhut and Scotch Bonnet peppers have amazed us with their flavour and especially their aroma. I am now waiting for the Habs to mature.

RE: Bhut Jolokia Heat

For those afraid of the heat, just make sure you mix it with something else. It's surprising when you mix it with other ingredients how much the heat cuts down. Even though our fresh salsa had other hot peppers it was quite a difference in the heat level then eating it alone. We hadn't grown superhots before, and were a little "hesitant" of the Bhut, but no more. It's amazing aroma and flavour trumps the heat when mixed with other ingredients.

All this growing sounds so interesting seems to me you all are profesionals at this, I had gotten some seeds but they did not sprout for me, so I am wondering where did you buy the seeds? I want this pepper so badly, at least one plant so point me in the right direction to adquire seeds for the ghost pepper Thanks Marcie

Marcie:
I would suggest one of three sources. I purchased mine from www.pepperjoe.com, http://www.thehippyseedcompany.com/ or http://www.chilepepperinstitute.org/

I got mine from Pepper Joes but the other two are very highly regarded sites for the Ghost Pepper seeds.

I have purchased seeds from pepper joe for about five years now, never a problem. If you are looking for bhut jolokia seeds, I can send you some this fall after I dry them. I saved some last season and they had about an 80% success rate. I overwintered my plant and this year's pods look good. Let me know.

RE: Bhut Jolokia Growth Timeline

Marcie: the secret to getting hot peppers to sprout is to have them in a domed tray or similar set up on a heat mat. They need the heat and humidity to sprout. In fact, they also seem to need warm roots to grow as well. Just remember to remove the dome after they sprout as the humidity can cause damping off once they've come up.
