When to move back in?

After the best summer in over 50 years I've had a great first year as a chile farmer in cold Norway. However, the season is slowly drawing to an end. It's still warm when the sun is up, but we're getting progressively more rain and hard wind. My porch peppers (potted) have started yellowing due to excess water, and lost quite a bit of foliage from the wind.

Question: I want to attempt overwintering a couple of plants. When should I pull them back in? Should I try to squeeze every last drop out of the season outdoors, or should I fetch them in while they're still relatively healthy?

Also, is it likely that I'll be successful overwintering plants that have been in the ground? I imagine they will take more damage from being excavated than a potted plant would from being repotted and pruned.

Attached is a photo of a Poblano that's literally been under the weather the past week.
