I guess it all depends on what you mean by "medium hots". If you mean something like 1/3 as hot as a ghost pepper/Bhut jolokia, then i'll insist on a popular favorite, the Yellow Fatalii. Just too much flavor to not recommend. You could start seed in late February, and still have a great head start when transplanting outside mid-May.

If you mean something even less hot than that, and you sow seed early in December, then maybe try out a couple of Manzano, Locoto, Rocoto varieties (they are all related Pubescens types). These must be started early or you'll be over-wintering them into a 2nd season.

Otherwise some good workhorse varieties are Serrano, Fresno, Hungarian wax, cherry bomb, Lemon Drop/Aji Limon. You could start these a little later, early March for instance, since they are faster growing, but the Lemon Drop may be the slowest of this particular bunch.

Just my 2c and a few ideas to research, good luck either way.

when I think "medium hot" I think habanero. they're my favorite variety of pepper, and there are many strains.

yellow, chocolate, orange, red, white, and plenty of others. next year I am gonna grow every variety of hab I can get my hands on, in addition to some superhots.

I've heard good things about yellow fatalii as well. gonna grow them too.
