Ahh merlinjr, most excellent response. I'm very grateful for the rapid response. I'll now do more searching. On to repotting advice!

you've got lots of 5 gallon buckets behind you. why not drill holes in one of them and put the plant in there? you could do it now if you really want to. pepper plants are tough to kill.

None of the above. Just water a little so the root ball isn't totally dry, slip it out of it's pot, vertically score the surface of the root ball with a knife, pop into the new pot, stuff the corners with new dirt, and water in like Noah's Flood (stuffing in new dirt as it settles). Put the plant/pot back into circulation, expect a pause or even a little wilting, then stand back as the new juice kicks in.

Up-potting is easy, though handling the plant between pots can be tricky at first (hint: don't hold it by the stem). Also put some dirt in the new pot to bring the level of the surface up about to where you will want it.
