This is my first year growing chiltepins. I was so happy when I saw immature fruit developing and now I have a plant-full of green pods. . . just sitting there. . . tormenting me with their . . . uh . . .green-ness (sorry, the best I could come up with). Will my tepins ever ripen and reward all of my efforts with their fiery treats??? Please say yes...

Patience is a virtue in chile growing.

Watched Pot never boils. :) Take a few days off-go fishing or something... When you get back the plant will be 2X as big and you'll have red pods comming out your ears. |

Awwwww man, no one told me I had to wait for these things to grow!? I thought you popped 'em in the ground and BANG . . . salsa baby!!! I guess I'll have to take up another hobby while waiting for fruits to ripen. Maybe nerf herding?

have you tried a green one? you might be surprised. plop one of those suckers in your mouth and see how it is....afterall, if it does taste yum to you, then you are ahead of the game, if not, then you were waiting anyway. put a bunch in a bottle and add some rice vinegar, put in fridge, and in a few weeks try it out on some veggies. refill with vinegar when it gets low and those peppers will heat up the vinegar for many refills...hope it works for you and glad you have peppers. my 2 chilitepins are just starting to form blooms and so you are way way way ahead of mine....good luck to ya

I have two tepins growing right now and both are producing nicely. They were VERY slow to start but once they started blossoming, they went buck wild!!! I may just have to try a green one just to say I did. Will advise...

More so than other peppers they seem to go from green to red nearly overnight. Perhaps other small ones do as well.

chiltepin is great green. you can make salsa w/ them, cook with them. i rarely have the patience to let them go red. i only let them grow red if i have been gone for the weekend or if i'm waiting for pods for seed - or if there are just too many to pick while green! get yourself like 5 plants and i guarantee that some will go red regardless of how many you pick!! | Yeah, they reseed so easy. I have about a dozen volunteer plants! They are easier to pick red, they fall right off. |

Thank you reyna1. I did go out and try a green tepin pod. My first reaction was "WOW! What a nice flavor and nice little heat." About five seconds late "WELL JESUS JALAPENO PALOMINO!!!!! GIVE ME SOME YOGURT. . . MILK. . . . BREAD!!!!! Now that the "quick heat" has subsided, I am able to reflect on my experience. Them puppies are HOT! Very nice flavor but I think I'm going to wait until ripe.

In Mexico, the flavor is described as "'arrebatado', an expression that means 'although it is extremely hot the sensation dissappears easily and rapidly."'

Bingo!!! Hit the nail right on the head (or tongue anyway). I was trying to remember what the Spanish term was for it. My term for the heat was HOLY SH*T!!!!!!!!
