A first, at least for me.

Picking a couple of ripe Espanola pods today I noticed major damage around the root area of one of the pods. My first thought was that the bain of my gardening existence, the EVIL Earwigs had done a number on it. A second look revealed something different.

Over my many years of growing peppers I've encountered numerous pods where smaller pods had begun to sprout inside the main one. It's not really that uncommon. Today I encountered my first example where the smaller interior sprouting pod grew enough to rupture the flesh of its host.

Obviously from the size of and decay around the ruptured area it broke through a while ago but I only spotted it today when I pulled the pod.

Not an earth shattering discovery, just thought I'd share.
