What is the Difference Between Carribean Red & Red Savina

Posted by midwestchilehead 5 (My Page) on

I know the red savina is trademarked or copyrighted or whatever, but I'm just wondering what is the difference between the two? I have seeds for both, but have been told that I can't sell the Red Savina seeds but can the Carribean Red. Is that true?

Red Savina is patented. Very hot 577000 Scoville units. Seed are expensive due to the patent. Caribbean Red is hot at 445000 scoville units, is readily available at lower prices.

The Patent ran out but the name is still copyrighted from what I've heard from the guys at the nursery.
Last year or the year before they sold red savinas legaly without having to get the owners permission/pay the fee...

Before a lot of companies sold caribbean reds as red savinas saying they were the same thing-some still do.

They aren't even close in my opinion.
A lot of red colored habaneros were sold as red savinas for years.
People who are used to getting only jalapenos didn't know what hot was , so habaneros that were red could easily be sold as red savinas.Nobody knew the difference...Some still don't...
Today it's the longer varieties of orange or red habaneros being sold as bhut jolokias or another super hot.
It's all big bucks these days, especially in the last 5-7yrs.

There is a seller at teh Union square farmers market that sell hot peppers. I bought some Chocolate Brown. Tasted hot and great. I bought a red Savina.
I tasted and I said "this is not hot". was really mild.

They thought I was crazy but I insisted not hot and they let me exchange it for other chocolate brown and a "Gambia" that they said it was mild.

I was suspicious as they had long shaped Habaneros in the Scotch Bonnet basket and viceversa.

At home I tried a piece of the Gambia. I have to say it was insanely hot. Almost made me hallucinate. My lips were on fire and I was lucky I had a bottle of kefir but it did not do much. I had to keep an icecupe on my lips.

Was unlike any other SB/Hab I tried.
I think they had all the peppers mismatched in their baskets and I must have got a real Red Savina from the "Gambia" basket.

Too hot even to taste. It smelled good.

Smoke, you say they aren't even close in your opinion. What differentiates them? Are the savinas much hotter than the Carribean red? They look pretty close on the scoville scale, but from the pics I've seen on tv and the web, the Savina is much bigger. Maybe its just those magical properties Jim has in Indiana. I don't know and am just trying to figure out the difference.

RE: What is the Difference Between Carribean Red & Red Savina

I'm bumping up this old thread to see if anyone has additional experience/input on the differences between these two peppers. I have limited garden space and want to grow a red hab but not necessarily two varieties. Would appreciate hearing from those who are familiar with either.

It was also mentioned on another thread that the Red Savina is very erratic in heat levels. Has anyone experienced this behavior as well?

TIA for any additional input!

I grew the Red Savina last season. It was much bigger and more productive than the Caribbean Red, and hotter too. I didn't notice much of a variation in heat levels. They were all very hot, but nothing like a Trinidad Scorpion or Bhut Jolokia.
