What is the difference between pepperoncinis and banana peppers. I've been told that they are the same thing. Is that true?

There are 2 kinds of pepperoncini. I learned that this year. Italian are mild and long. Greek are a couple inches long, small, light green, thin fleshed and hot. http://www.gardenguides.com/seedcatalog/vegetables/pepperpepperoncinig reek.htm
