One time I bought Habanero's from the store, cut them open and planted the seeds, at that point I just wanted to know if the seeds were viable or not. They sprouted fine so I dried the rest for the next growing season. I did not soak or anything just put them in a soil mix. So yes fresh seeds will sprout.

Thank you so much Mark. I wanted to try chillies from a long time but never had idea that they can be sown fresh too. Many web pages recommended drying so I kept them in sun and they got burned.

You dry them for storage...so they won't mold and spoil.

Fresh pepper seeds will, indeed, germinate.

Hmmm, I never knew fresh seeds would germinate. I guess it never crossed my mind. I have always dried them for a few days before planting.

Think of how pepper seeds sprout without an OCD human to help them. The pod falls off the plant into the dirt and like as not rots, providing moisture and maybe nutrition until the (fresh) seed can get its little root down into the dirt.

A pepper sprouting from a dried seed would seem be the less usual case.

I see your point DMForcier, but up here in the north, most seeds drop in the fall. Sit there until the snow flies and then when it warms back up in the spring, they sprout. Not sure how they know not to sprout right away after they drop in the fall. This is why I kind of assumed fresh seed wouldn't sprout without some kind of intervention.

Some seeds require a period of cold stratification, certain conifers for example. But that kind of cold would destroy pepper seeds.

Peppers don't need cold to germinate.(or light for that matter like some other seeds do)

They just won't germinate when it's cold.

Not like some seeds that need cold for a time before they germinate-hops for one.

It's debatable whether frozen,fresh seeds will germinate.
In my experience they won't BUT I see several posts about seeds from frozen pods that did grow.

I have personally grown pepper plants from the seeds that I took out of fresh peppers, purchased from Asian store.

O ! I just remember to go to Asian market and get some chilies for seed. I also visit Indo-Pakistani and Mexican stores for dried peppers.
