Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

Posted by struwwelpeter 5 (My Page) on

Because, as far as I am concerned, Bhut Jolokia is a much better tasting pepper. There is no point in growing habanero peppers anymore. Now, I will have to give away the frozen habanero peppers in my freezer.

Huh? That’s like saying; plain old white milk is obsolete because chocolate milk taste better; salt is dead because sugar tastes sweeter; baked potatoes are no more because fries taste better??? Where will this madness end!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my limited experience with Bhuts, yes they have a very nice flavour but they extract a hell-of-a price in pain for it.

I grow a variety of peppers from sweet to hot each year. They each have their redeeming value and uses. I mostly grow to consume but I also grow some out of curiosity and interest. Personally, Orange Habs are my favourite all around hot pepper. Good taste and manageable heat level (for my taste).

Go ahead, drink your chocolate milk and eat your sugared fries. I’ll keep my options open.

I can’t believe I spent all this time responding on this topic. Where did I leave my blue pills?

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

I like habs and fatalis better. Nagas, bhut and scorpions taste like chemicals too me. Too strong. Gotta love the heat though.

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

No, because I can make chocolate milk from white milk but not vice versa. I can't make Bhut Jolokia from Habaneros and I can't think of any application in which I would prefer Habaneros over Bhut Jolokia.

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

Looks like a troll to me.... :)

So all other peppers taste the same?

Only Bhuts have a taste everyone HAS to like better?
Glad you aren't in charge of worldwide pepper production.

I'm growing between 300 and 400 varieties of peppers right now.and will replace them with the same # for my winter crop.

Guess I better toss out everything but my Bhut Jolokia,Bih Jolokia,Naga Morich and all the different strains of each I'm growing...

What about my 7 pot and Trinidad Scorpion strains?
Can I like them too?
They are about as hot as some nagas.

What a dumb thing to say...

You are definately not a chile head.

Can't appreciate the delicate differences and complex flavors of different pepper varieties.
Can't make Mole, chile Rellanos etc. with just Bhuts.

RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

lol

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

Wow, and I always thought chocolate milk came from brown cows.

struwwelpeter you are obviously a well educated person and brighter than the general population so I guess I'll have to eat only Bhuts based on your expert opinion.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.

Ya right... dream on.

OK, you caught me on a technicality but my point was made.
Forget the milk and eat your sugared fries.

I grow weary of this conversation. Let's move on.

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

i <3 sugared fries.

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

come on guys, lets not turn this into another IMDB board

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

Whats IMDB mean?

I don't really think the original post was serious.
Just a troll to see who would bite.
Someones having fun I think.

Like going to a wine site and saying that there is no reason to drink all that old , dusty aged stuff because Mad dog has more alcahol in it and they prefere the taste.
Toss out the vintage stuff. LOL

Couldn't be serious.
Not on a pepper forum.
Especialy when there are posts about "Whats your favorite sweet pepper" etc.

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

Unless I'm way off in left field somewhere.. IMDB is the Internet Movie DataBase. Apparently there have been some major tantrum arguements on the different movie forums.

Whether the OP was serious or not, I have to say, it's just one man's opinion (albeit agreeing with everyone, an over-simplistic and narrowminded opinion) and he has the right to express it as such. Who are we, oh mighty of the pepper-gods, to deny him his rants on the lowly habanero in favour of the mighty bhut?

Now, that being said, IMO, the subtle flavour differences between the varieties habs I've had far outweigh in taste and quality the single fresh and 2 dried bhuts I have ever tried. And with regard to sweet, hot, medium, mild, or whatnot...like Smokemaster says "300-400 varieties" [plus plus plus]. There are just way too many different and complex peppers to exalt one over all others. There is no way I could ever say one single variety of pepper is my favourite; can any of you?

Maybe there's more to it than that, and I'm just too simple, but again, that's just MY opinion. ;)

Hello?

Variety is the Spice of Life! I think that after a few drinks people say really weird things....having said that, I love all peppers....duh isn't that why this is the Hot Pepper Forum? I think I shall put some more Baileys in my coffee....TeeHee.....Habs will never be obsolete in my book! You have got to be kidding me?! Troll that is what it is a Troll....I like that smokemaster:)

You (plural) are projecting your mental attributes onto me. What part of "as far as I am concerned" didn't you understand?

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

I have to agree, struwwelpeter, is allowed to state for himself that "Habanero Peppers are obsolete".

For myself I prefer a little less spice so I can taste some of the pepper and take more then the smallest bite. My favorites are Manzano, Habaneros, Tabasco, Jalapeno, and Serrano.

Some spicy peppers I plan on trying next season are Lemon Drop, Fatalii, and a Turkish pepper Pasa Tohumculuk.

green grocer hit it right on the nose

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

Of course we are all entitled to our opinion. It just seemed a little overboard to say you wont grow them and have to give them all away. People have favorite peppers just like they have favorite sports teams. Maybe you should get a Bhut Jolokia t-shirt or foam finger. But just like sports teams, you might get under someones skin by saying their favorite pepper sucks.

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

WoW, who spilled pepper all over De forum. has anyone here tasted the white hab. it's is like no other (sounds familiar). but seriously, it has a unique flavor and heat :) that turned my salsa into finger licking/ bowl licking/ set aside my portion before the herd gets to it, goodness that just can't be beat...LOL.

Forgive my Jubilance...

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

I've got freezer space for those habs if you need to get rid of them ;)

Personally I find the fatalii has the overall best mix of taste, heat, and aromatic impact on cooked food. But I still find the good old orange hab to be the most generally versatile and dependably useful hot pepper for almost anything that would call for heat. We use orange habs as fast as the plants can produce them; there's never a ripe one left.

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

OP: interesting perspective. I'm willing to take it at face value.

smokemaster: 300-400 varieties??? HFS - I genuflect before you

my general comments:
I find many peppers boring to a degree.. they might be interesting in size/shape/color but not necessarily in flavor or heat. for me orange habs are an exception - they are beautiful. i'm growing bhuts this year too - jury's still out but on initial inspection i think i'll have to give habs the nod...

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

OK, I said I grew weary of this conversation but after seeing the post count climb to 19 my curiosity got the best of me.

After reading the posts, I submit the following…

juicyj, IMDB, now I got to remember another four letter shortcut THANKS. Seriously, I think that’s the last thing any of us want. A salient point, TY.

green_grocer, Pepper Gods! If that’s the case, the Gods must be Crazy.
I don’t think any of us longer term posters think of ourselves as Gods… we all suffer failures and setbacks when we’re sure we got it down.

chinamon, you’re incorrigible.

To all the rest who defended struwwelpeter's right to his opinion, yes, we are all entitled to our opinion. I thought it was just a bit over the top and invited a shot or three. Hey, I’ve been called out many times (in posts and PMs) for my comments or questions by many posters I’ve come to trust and respect (old and new). I’ve usually deserved it and no offence was taken… except when smokemaster made fun of my Peter Peppers.

Finally, struwwelpeter, after reviewing your past posts I don’t think you’re a troll. I still think your Bhut post was ill thought out but that’s just "my" opinion. Please feel free to slam me for any ill thought out posts in the future.

In closing I’d like to say…

smokemaster; I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction.

Struwwelpeter; Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

Don't get mad at me...

I'm not the one putting his shorts in the freezer because they are going to stick some bhuts in the wrong end after they take some viagra...
But then again, maybe thats not the wrong end for you .....6 fingers 4 toes or visa versa...

Hmmmm ,maybe farting in my general direction, for you , is blowing me a kiss...?

Now I'm all confused again.
And I thaught Hollywood was strange.

By the way,I hear it's not smart to bend over after taking viagra ta blow your kisses to people.

Ya can poke an eye out... :o

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

For myself I prefer a little less spice so I can taste some of the pepper and take more then the smallest bite. My favorites are Manzano, Habaneros, Tabasco, Jalapeno, and Serrano.

Please, try grating frozen peppers, including Bhut Jolokia, over your food and then tell me whether your perspective changed.

Finally, struwwelpeter, after reviewing your past posts I don’t think you’re a troll.

It is like the difference between rude and tactless. Rudeness requires effort whereas tactlessness does not. What others accuse me of as trolling is effortless for me. Intent to disrupt a group is a necessary condition for trolling. I have no intent to disrupt, but I don't care whether others are disrupted or not. Furthermore, I see nothing wrong with trolls because

1. The ridiculous concept of crimes based on intent is mostly an invention of liberals whom I hate. I welcome opportunities to ridicule self appointed thought police, e.g, troll accusers.

2. As long as lying (which is independently immoral) is not used, those who are disrupted should take 100% responsibility for their own actions and not seek a scapegoat, e.g., troll.

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

Huh???

to lend to/allow room for...is to appeal to our better nature (empathy/consideration). as Jubilance and all that comes with it is a given (we've all been there). hence, your more thoughtful response;

"My favorites are Manzano, Habaneros, Tabasco, Jalapeno, and Serrano.
Please, try grating frozen peppers, including Bhut Jolokia, over your food and then tell me whether your perspective changed".

growing peppers is a passion unlike others. i like growing tomatoes, melons, etc. however i love the challenge of growing peppers. they're interesting, edgy and fun...hence passionate. my point...

a more thoughtful title expressing your thoughts/excitement with the bhuts might
have been best. but hey, we're all human
here. i would think the intention is never
to offend...

and with that, this newbie is out...

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

Hail to the beautiful Orange Habanero:) I salute the Bhut!
I sit here in amazement at the number of posts on someone's opinion......like belly buttons......every one has one....I toast my tequila shot to all of you.....

Have you ever read the book " Taming Your Gremlin? " Maybe it is a Gremlin and not a troll....just kidding:)

ok that was the most colorful conversation ive seen on the topic of peppers :O

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

Ya,I learned that Conserative people don't know how to troll and your a Liberal if you say that a self proclaimed Conservative is trolling.
I also learned I'm a thaught policeman and I didn't even know it.

Pretty interesting stuff.

And of coarse I learned you don't need any other pepper but Bhut Jolokia in your garden,or on your table.

I wonder if Bhuts are Conservative peppers and the rest are Liberal.

Crap I'm all confused again. LOL

Smoke,

I have a strong will but a weak won’t… so I’ll bite.

STOP now, I just finished my laundry!

First, NO, not THAT blue pill!

"You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes." The Matrix… not the OTHER blue pill. Get out of the gutter!

Let this one go my friend. If we don’t protect freedom of speech, we will never know who the --------‘s are.

Please let this thread die. It’s not helping any of us advance pepper growing.

Of course, I cede to your sharp whit and am expecting a slam as a last post ;-))))

Bill

Ps. One last thought… after munching on a Bhut… If oranges smell like chicken, why are tomatoes blue? Think about it!

RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

Because of the flavor ravings of someone in this forum two years ago, I grew chocolate habaneros last year. Now, I have about 3 lbs of chocolate habaneros in my freezer that I have no plans to use, even before I tasted my first Bhut Jolokia.

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

And I found the flavor of bhut jolokia/bih jolokia [grew 'em both] only slightly more interesting than an orange hab, which is to say, not at all. I hate orange habs.

Harold's St. Barts is the perfect c. chinense and anyone who says otherwise should be put on a watch list.

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

Datils are my favorite C. chinense so far.

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

struwwelpeter, it seems like you have been around awhile but do you realize just how many varieties of habanero's there are? To characterize all habanero's as being obsolete because of one pepper is pretty short sided would'nt you say?

Dale

 o
RE: Habanero Peppers Are Obsolete

short sided

That should be "short sighted."

I am not going to grow another habanero before tasting a sample. How's that for compromise?

 o
