Leaf loss

I've had a lot of leaf loss in the past couple weeks on a few of my plants. They're all planted in the same raised garden, but only some of them are losing leaves more than others.

Any ideas and quick fixes? It's been over 100 and very arid here the last few days, if that helps.

Are the leaves changing color before dropping? Holes? Wilt?

Any pod drop?

DMF:

No pod drop.

Yellowing - yes, normal stuff though, just more of it(which, in effect, is causing the leaf drop).

No holes.

Wilt - not extreme but the ones that are losing more leaves are wilting some.

It's mainly the bells and Anaheims. Normally I wouldn't be TOO concerned -- it's just that these varieties are more apt for sunscald than the others.

The Jalapenos and Serranos are LESS affected. The others(thai, guajillo, and naga(guess) are in containers and they seem just fine.

Possibly soil related?

RE: Leaf toss

I suspect your guesses are going to be as good as mine, but here's my best. You're seeing normal heat effects, possibly combined with a slight nutrient deficiency in the soil.

I'd like to hear from someone who has experience growing in late heat. When I was in Texas I wasn't growing peppers. (Just eating them.)

RE: Leaf loss

Im growing in texas in the ground not pots and mine are being devastated. the heat has subsided now but my plants besides the jalapenos as you say all have been suffering leaf loss. at first it was spider mites, now I dont know it just seems early june seems to be the peak of the plants where the leaves are beautiful, the jalapenos are huge. And now late summer it just seems everything is struggling, what jalapenos come now are small, The two bhut plants 4 feet tall have never produced a pod even though there are tons of flowers.
It just seems when a plant is in its initial stages of growth is when the peppers look the best, but then I see people with mature plants; some with 2nd year huge plants with tons of peppers. I guess everything has to do with growing condition and soil that may have become saturated with microbes or fungi. I think im gonna grow pots next year with that 5-1-1 and move then in shade during hot months

DMF:

I suspect they'll rebound SOME as long as the EXTREME heat keeps lowering. I just like to keep them going into December/January if I can.

As far as nutrients, do you suspect any in particular?

Daryll:

Same thing except mine don't struggle until around this time each year.

As far as the container thing goes, I just might go ALL container. Anything I've ever grown in them does better than in the garden. The only reason why I don't like them is the INORGANIC aspect of it all. Though, I have some large oak barrels that sustain a microherd pretty well.

RE: Leaf floss

Well, you're asking the wrong guy when it comes to soil chemistry. I still have a lot to learn. But best guess is something preventing the uptake of nutrients that support foliage. Do you know your soil pH? How do you fertilize? Do you use Epsom salts?

RE: Leaf loss

its the same thing with tomatoes; like my celebrities in early spring I get tons of tomatoes and the leaves look great then as heat comes, which I need for more and bigger tomatoes but then the leaves always look terrible. I dont use any pesticides whatsoever, except the bt worm killer when the hornworms come. there are just so many insects you dont even know who is inside the stems of the plants or even roots in summer. In spring it seems I dont deal with any incests whatsoever and the quality of the fruit is better. I wonder why there are so many problems in summer vs spring regarding incests? I think next year if I do plant in ground again im going to start earlier and look for a huge pepper spring harvest instead of summer.

Easy. Skimpier clothing.

DMF:

Ph- It's been quite some time since I tested. I've always assumed it was fine as long as I kept feeding it organic matter.

Fertilization - Plenty of compost, then a dose of 15-30-15 every couple months or so along with compost tea(intermittently) and epsom salts every now and then.

/shrug

DAryll:

Yea. you seem to garden and have the same issues I do. I do, however, use neem(whiteflies and aphids), sulfur(mites and powdery mildew), homemade soap(general soft-bodied insects), diatomaceous earth(earwigs, slugs, and other crawlers), along with the BT(hornworms and cabbage loopers0.

The INORGANIC part of my gardening comes in the occasional dose of the 15-30-15 and the peppers I have in buckets(5-1-1, first year). Too bad malathion and DDT weren't organic. ;) It get's frustrating to be try to be organic -- not to mention expensive and more work.

Regarding starting early-- unless you can get that soil warmed up, it's probably not going to make too much of a difference to start a few weeks earlier. Your peppers and maters will just sit there in the ground waiting until it warms. It appears you get real warm a lot earlier than I do -- some shade cloth just might make a world of difference. You also might try researching tomato varieties that do better in warmer conditions. I saw something by Bonnie Plants called Solar Fire that claimed it did well in hot, humid conditions. Maybe a late spring planting?

Now, back to ME-- Anybody else want to put their 2 cents in here??

:)

Is it yellowing on the bottom or top try lots of coffee grounds till it cools of then go back to ferts I'm here in phoenix nowhere hotter or dryer and my peppers r almost 6 foot now just started pumpin up the miracle grow tomato formula to usher in my second crop

DM, haha Skimpier clothing creating pedophiles. That was a knee slapper haha.

 o
RE: Leaf loss

No, not pedophiles. "Revealed" secondary sex characteristics wouldn't encourage them since their prey doesn't have any yet.

Beyond that the joke doesn't stand much scrutiny so I'll write no more, write no more.

RE: Leaf loss

I've been wondering why my plants just aren't growing any longer and just look spent with yellowing leaves etc. Tonight near dusk shook a few plants which I haven't used orange oil in weeks and there are hundreds of whiteflys on all plants. They are everywhere. so I sprayed with orange oil and maybe since im still getting to 85 everyday now here, just maybe some life can come back to these plants if I stay up on the spraying. Anyone else have any problems with whiteflys and other gnat type pests?

 o
RE: Leaf loss

I get whiteflies also Daryll.

This MIGHT help you.

Kevin

P.S.

From my reading and deducing, it appears to me that controlling ants might be an important step in controlling whiteflies AND aphids.

Here is a link that might be useful: click here

 o
RE: Leaf loss

I occasionally get whiteflies, usually indoors. Spider mites are more common here. They're a pain to control too. Fortunately none on the peps (knock wood).

The plants will be okay. Get rid of the little b#@%^&s and the plants will come right back.
