No, I would not remove the leaves except the lower soiled ones.
OTOH: It should not make any difference, if you wash the roots, cut them off, remove some of the leaves.
It is just simpler, less time consuming not to get involved. Actually, doe it make a difference if you hang it upside down or upside up ? Me thinks "no". But it is easier to hang them upside down rather than upside up. hehe
