Growing Bhut Jalokia Chilis in Seattle
I have successfully (and easily) got a nice crop of Bhut Jolokia (Ghost Pepper)- see pics.
This plant is in its second year, was bought as a young, flowering plant commercially in July 2013. Put in a larger pot ever since, it produced a surprising number of ripe fruit by last fall, when I brought it inside under lights, trimmed a bit, and harvested the fruit over the winter. In spring, around late May, back it went outside, and is just (early October) being taken inside again. Most fruit very ripe, and about a hundred chilis on small bush.
The fruit is searingly hot- razor blade-like feeling on the tongue) making Habeneros (another success story similar to the one just told), seem like a bit of a piker.
Even though this has won the sweepstakes for heat, I am retiring this plant (because of the extreme heat, unleavened by flavor). However if anyone is interested in getting some seeds, just ask, and I'll dry and send some- no charge. A labor of love.
