Aribibi Gusano germinating/growing tips?

Posted by milehighgirl 5/CO (My Page) on

I purchased some seeds last year and had quite poor germination results. I finally gave up and bought a plant. It did not fare well. It grew a bit, but really just floundered. I brought it in to try to over-winter, but now it's dead.

I was trying to germinate at 30 degrees C., and when I lowered the temp I had better results with the rest of my peppers. I also had better results getting my Rocoto to germinate when I did it in soil, rather than a paper towel (The tough seed head really needed the soil to soften and remove it). So, if I try soil and lower the temp I might have better results for germination. But what about afterwards?

Does Aribibi Gusano need any special conditions to grow?

not sure MileHighGirl.

i'm now growing this plant for the first time, not germinated by me. so i'm looking forward to seeds. right now i have it in my garage with a hps on it (also a first). i have noticed that the aribibi like my other pepper plants were able to tolerate protected outdoor (sunroom) temps of high 40's to low 50's when combined with humidities of approx 70% to 80% or greater. ofcourse this was discovered accidently while waiting for my hps to arrive. anyway, since then, i've been combining small bowls of water amoung my pepper plants along with the hps. my aribibi in particular is now fruiting. not sure if this helpful, just my experience so far.

milehighgirl,

DON'T give up.

I'm not familiar with Aribibi Gusano but I have great success with many other varieties in seed starting mix covered @ 25C-27C. Keep your mix moist but not wet (over watered).

Once they sprout, remove the cover and they should be fine.

I've been growing this pepper for a couple years now. Very hard to germinate, I wait for warmer temps. in may or early June.
Plant grew 4 1/2 ft. tall this year out in the garden.
Green peppers mild, yellow, red peppers, very, very, hot!
Small yeild, small pepper, will not plant here in zone 5 again.

Funny you say you waited till warm weather. That's the only way I could the my Rocoto's to germinate. I could NOT get them to germinate, then when two did they would not loose their seed head. I was so frustrated while they just withered and died!

Maybe I will do the same with these as well. Are they worth it?
