What's the tastiest hot NuMex variety?

| There are a lot of New Mexico ("NuMex") varieties available. I lived in Santa Fe for a while, where people are crazy about peppers, and I remember that the salsa and dishes made with peppers in that area tasted great and were not super-hot by any means. I am wondering which NuMex (or other variety) delivers the kind of rich flavor you can taste in quality New Mexico chili powder.
I am thinking of a hot chili that tastes good green or red, is good for fragrant powder as well as pickling or cooking in large portions, maybe as hot as a jalapeno give or take a bit.
As a bonus, something that is made for short season areas (like NM Espanola) would probably be good for me. The ones I have read about that seem to be about right are Espanola, Joe Parker, Santa Fe Grande, a hybrid called "inferno"- all sound good on paper, but I am wondering if anyone has an opinion about these or others? |

| I grew the Santa Fe Grande this year, and thought it was quite good. In fact, it's the only mild/medium hot pepper on my list for 2010, as I'm planning to transition over to more of a habanero - cayenne - jalapeno focus nextt year. I also grew the NuMex Big Jim, which was a bit mediocre taste-wise, and NuMex Twilight, which doesn't really fit with your needs. The Santa Fe is a very nice thick-fleshed, medium-sized mild pepper with a hint of sweetness, some richness in the taste, and they're good eaten fresh, stuffed, roasted, or just sliced and thrown into cooked food. |

If you want something just a little bit hotter, try Sandias. In my opinion, none of the NuMex varieties are good for salsa. They are better used as Megachili suggested. John A |

| Negro de Valle is my favourite for flavour with a bit of heat. Lumbre or Sandia would be better if you wanted them a bit hotter. |
