brain strain producing smooth pods

one of my brain strain plants is on it's 3rd flush for the year (thank you, florida sunshine). the previous 2 flushes gave me picturesque brain strain pods, looking exactly like the bumpy ugly gnarlyness one would expect from a brain strain. but all the pods on the third flush are all really smooth, and have more of a classic scorpion shape. now all my brain pods started out mostly smooth, but got bumpy as they matured. well, many pods are pretty much full size and will soon be turning red, but are all quite smooth. why would this happen?

also, note the lacewing eggs visible on the leaf in the bottom of the pic. the white residue visible on the pod is from the insecticidal soap.
