Hugel - does the soil level drop over time ?

Just curious
if you build a Hugelculture bed, with branches and other raw material
Does the level drop over time ?
Since the stuff gets broekn down, i would imagine it has to.
i read someone mention that once before.

I guess its not a problem, if its 3ft high,
but the one i built, is only several inches above grade.
with just small branches and grass clippings.
i thought it would be a foot or more, but after a rain and some settling, its only a few inches high. and when those grass clippings and branches degrade, i imagine it will drop more ?

It's normal for the bed to drop a fair amount after its been created - particularly if you didn't make a big effort to "fill in the gaps" between the branches. After the initial settling though it will only drop very gradually as the materials beneath breakdown.. how fast it'll break down depends heavily on your climate but, if you've used fairly thin branches they're liable to breakdown fairly rapidly.
