Zone 4

Zone 4... "Is semi-wild. This zone is mainly used for forage and collecting wild food as well as timber production. An example might be coppice managed woodland." - from Graham's Intro to PC page. What do you have in your Zone 4? Do you have a zone 4 or are you doing Permaculture in a suburban/urban situation?

We have woodlands that we are thinning (they were clear-cut around 1900 and have regrown too thick) and we do harvest that wood. There are herbs and some plants that we use also. More than anything this area is a retreat for us.

RE: Zone 4

I live in an urban setting so have skipped over zone 4 into zone 5. The back corners of the garden are used as wildlife corridors. They back onto an alley, there is a fence between the yard and the alley, I have sown native grasses and wildflowers in this area to encourage butterflies and others to visit. There are two raised beds not far away from this spot, approx. 5 feet and I have a small sitting area between the 2 raised beds. It is a place to watch things grow and see who comes to help. It provides me and excellent opportunity to observe Nature in action.

The back yard is all natives, including some edible ones that are occasionally used. This area isn't watered or fertilized, and only occasionally weeded. Also at the end of the driveway is a native flower area which includes camas intended for eating the roots someday.
