Guild plants for Orange Tree?

Posted by gardenlessa z9 Sunset15 (My Page) on

Hello All,

I have a navel orange tree in my front yard, currently amidst a sea of lawn, but I'd prefer to build a guild around it. Has anyone a pointer to building a guild specifically for an orange tree? I have read about one for an apple tree, but I'm not sure how much applies, since citrus has a much larger nitrogen requirement.

Thanks for any help!

RE: Guild plants for Orange Tree?

I´ll tell you what I do under my oranges ( 5 0f them)
In spring i sow pumpkins and by the end of june they completely cover the ground under the row of oranges. 20 m long and 1.5 m wide.
at the end of august I sow broad beans and peas among the pumpkings. come october ,the pumpkin leaves fade and the broad beans and peas thrive and pretty much cover the ground.
I carefully collect the pumpkins taking care not to tread too much on the broad bean plants. leaving the dying pumpking plants to die and rot in place.
in april , as i am harvesting the last of the broad beans and peas, i sow the pumpkins again and leave the broad bean and pea plants to die and rot in place.
I keep adding kitchen scraps under the leaves as this bed is close to the kitchen door.
it works beautifully and I keep getting bumper crops of all thre species

Thank you Francisco! Sounds wonderful! Can you tell me how close to the tree you plant the pumpkins, peas, and broad beans?

Cheers,

I sow all of them under the orange trees. some are right under the canopy and others in between the trees. the trees are 5 yards apart from each other.
the pumpkins I sow are of the rampant sort and they find their own room. the shoots that try to get out on to the footpath I bend in the right direction and they keep growing until they cover the whole ground.
fava beans and all sorts of peas I sow everywhere and they mingle with one another. I get so many that a lot of them don´t get picked.
if I was to sow them more orderly I sould be able to harvest with greater ease

g'day lessa,

i'm a bit late with this, but another suggestion that could help with bug control is plant nusturtiums (spelling?), marigolds and garlic chives under them.
