Compost sources in Los Angeles

Hi all,

I just moved to LA, and we are trying to get the garden started at our new house.

We are coming from San Diego, where you could drive up to the the compost site at the landfill and self load as much compost or mulch as you wanted for free. Or for a small fee, they would front-load a cubic yard or two into your truck.

My wife went to Griffith Park here and bought a compost bin, but they told her they put out the compost in fairly small loads and the commercial landscapers usually snatch it up pretty quickly.

She got a flyer listing of a number of city locations for mulch pickup, but no mention of compost.

Can anyone recommend locations in or around Los Angeles for free compost, including composted horse manure or mushroom compost?

If not, what about locations to buy by the cubic yard (front-loaded) rather than in small bags?
