If it isn't the clumping kind, you're in for major trouble. A previous owner of a house I rented a few years ago (Zone 6, New Jersey) was into weird plants and had put bamboo in sunken metal cans in the back and side yard. It did not stay in the cans, alas, and ran amok through the entire yard and into the neighbors'.

Be very, very careful with bamboo.

Hi Demeter,
Have you any suggestions? I will be relying on this bamboo as lumber as well as food. Smitty

This guy sells different types of bamboo and his catalog seems very informative and he's local enough for you to drive there.

RE: Bamboo

For midwest bamboo, I would recommend Burton's Bamboo Garden in Morrow, Ohio. Jerry has extensive experience with bamboos in the hot summer/cold winter pattern in the MW, and he carries bamboos that have proved adapted to our climate.
