Scale? Mites? What is this?!

Hi

I had this weird growth on a dwarf umbrella tree. It got so bad that it killed half of the tree, and after a year of trying to get rid of the stuff I finally gave up and just threw away the tree. It was covered. I used "safe" soaps, and scrubbed the small spots away every week - all with no luck.

I never had the problem with any of my other houseplants - until today. A month after throwing away the tree, I discovered the growth starting on another plant. I broke off the 2 stems that were covered, and sprayed the entire plant.

Does anyone know what this is? There are no webs, or anything crawling, I see no bugs. Should I just throw out my newly infected plant or is there a cure?

Thanks!

I uploaded pictures to photobucket :

The problem is scale. And you already have a sizable population. It's rather challenging to deal with.

I wish did more research sooner! That tree would have been garbage 18 months ago. I just read that umbrella trees are notorious for scale. Now I know what all that sticky residue was on my table! It breaks my heart to throw away the newly infested plant - I've had it for 8 years, and it's beautiful. I started it from a 2 inch plant and it's grown into a huge, full beauty (tears). Oh well!

I now fear for my jades!

Thanks!

Now that you know what scale insects can look like, inspect all of your other plants carefully. Please know that jade plants can be sensitive to some insecticidal soaps, so you will be limited in what you will be able to use to control these pests.

You might consider checking out the House Plants forum and reading up on the zillions of threads that discuss how people deal with scale and other pests, including how to avoid them in the first place.
