It's sort of ratty-looking (not smooth and shiny, like other pictures I've seen online) but yeah, it does look a lot like a hornworm pupa. Especially with that curved tube that loops back to the body.
Definitely a foe! Not a friend. You can always put it in a jar (with holes on top), and maybe some dirt at the bottom, and see exactly which moth it is (i.e. exactly which hornworm / sphinx moth you are dealing with).
