if you are guessing.. because it is rust colored stuff.. well.. we need to confirm the ID before we make suggestions for acting ...

if you cant post a pic ... take a few leaves to your COUNTY extension office.. and ask them for an ID .. and suggested remedies ...

and then check back.. and we can discuss the various available remedies ....

Positively IDed as rust!

Most probably the common Mayapple rust (Puccinia podophylli Schwein.) which is widespread throughout NE states.

I can find about ten thousand articles describing it on the web, but can't seem to find any suggestions of a fungicide (hopefully a systemic one) recommended for it.

Guess I'll have to just try anything I can get at this time.

Look for a fungicide label that specifies rust control, there are probably several.

But you must also pay close attention to watering practices and careful housekeeping in the garden. You will never, ever be free of this disfiguring disease unless you work hand and hand with whichever chemicals you find.

And please know that you'll probably end up with an arsenal of chemicals as the fungicide du jour loses effectiveness as they are so wont to do. Please consider Neem oil as part of the solution, especially early in the season.

Rust is one of the hardest of any of the fungal pathogens to control - depending on the host plant, it is sometimes recommended to just rogue out or remove the culprit rather than deal endlessly with chemical controls that may or may not be very effective.

Two of the most efficiently rated fungicides for a wide variety of rusts are Daconil Ultrex and Phyton 27. It is important to note that these tend to be much more preventative in nature than curative, so treatment should start early - before you see any signs of the problem.

And rhizo makes a great point in attention being paid to cultural issues; watering, sanitation, crowding/air circulation, etc.
