Pygmy Palm Dieing

For years, we've had several beautiful, thriving pygmy palms. Recently they have started to die. The branches lowest to the ground die first and gradually the higher branches die too (see picture). Can someone tell me what might be happening and what I might be able to do to save them?

What Jean said, plus how often have you been watering, and have you given them any fertilizer or sprayed them or anything nearby lately? Any frost events?

We live in Southern California and we water every other day. Everything else in the yard looks good, just the pygmy palms seem to be suffering. Someone suggested that maybe our gardeners applied a grass deterrent around the beds and since these palms are of the "greater grass" family, they have essentially been poisoned?
