Juniperus virginiana

I also posted this question in the conifers forum in case you frequent both forums. My MIL has several juniper virginiana (eastern red cedars) that are at least 25 years old. The bark is all stripped off. What causes this?

RE: Juniperus virginiana

The older bark on Eastern Red Cedar does tend to exfoliate and that is normal.
