how to avoid attracting pests?

I'm new to gardening/indoor gardening, but have started getting into it recently. At the moment I have a couple of african violets, a golden pathos, and a lucky bamboo. I would like to expand to herbs next and some other flowers, but I'm afraid (especially with the herbs) that they might attract bugs/pests. I have not had a single bug in this apartment and I would like to keep it that way (except I did see a single fruit fly, so I laid out a couple of cups of vinegar with dish soap, and now I have not seen it in a couple weeks).

So how could I avoid attracting bugs with anything I might grow? Do herbs attract more pests than flowers do? Or just different kinds of pests? Any kinds of flowers or herbs that attract more pests? The best for no pests?

I live in a 28th story apartment in Chicago with no outdoor space, but plenty of light as I have large south facing windows. So I was going to grow everything on the windowsills or on tables near the windows.
