EAB has exit holes that are shaped like a 'D'. If you see plenty of holes in your tree with that shape, it is EAB. Otherwise, impossible to tell with info provided. Pix required.

The larva of the Emerald Ash Borer lives in and burrows around the cambium layer of the tree which then cuts off the flow of nutrients to the upper reaches of the tree. Most often the first sign people see of an infestation is that the top of the tree dies and then investigation of the trunk finds the "D" shaped exit holes the larve emerge from. The bark around that are can be easily pulled from the tree after the larve has done its thing, too.
If the trunk of the tree is being hollowed out there is something besides the EAB in that tree.
