grubs in potting soil

Hi. Can anyone tell me what these grubs are. My pots are full of them. I collected about 60 in one pot! Are they harmful to the plants in the pots? I mainly grow annuals in the pots and they seem to be ok...a few die every now and then, but I just put that down to my lack of green fingers! :-) I would love to know what these are.
They are about 2.3cm long.

Japanese Beetle grubs!! Kill them!!! Kill them all!!!!
Not only will the grubs feast on the roots, but the adults will ravage your garden:(

kimmit, are you in France? I'm not sure of the worldwide range of Japanese beetles, but they are certainly a grub of one of the scarab beetles. Have you or your neighbors noticed a large number of beetles in your gardens last year?

oh .... forgot to mention.. put them on the driveway/sidewalk.. some bird will be very happy to rid you of them.. and do a quick composting of them ....
