Weird little parasite on cherry tree

I've got a bunch of weird little parasite like bugs on my cherry tree. Some branches are covered with them. They must be secreting some sweet stuff since the ants seem to be drawn to them. I can scrape them off and they appear to be gooey inside. Hope the picture helps. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Scale insects. The sticky stuff is honeydew -- sugary stuff which the ants eat.

To be precise, it looks like the fruit Lecanium scale. Good luck! ;-(

It seems that this scale on cherry in California does not require human intervention. (UC IPM online). Their advice not to use a chemical makes very good sense and if I can put in my two cents worth; before you do anything I'd ask that you learn all you can, about your particular situation, from knowledgeable sources. This may be very difficult to do when you are confronted daily with the problem but you will win out.
