Growing Grass in previous wooded area

We live in the woods and have always had trouble growing grass behind our house because of the shade. We cut down a number of big trees very close to the house for safety reasons. Oak, Hickory, Walnut. (we still have plenty!). We now want to be able to plant grass and need some info on how to start. We are in an area with a lot of orange clay in the soil. Our neighbor said we should apply lime before we start.
We do have grass growing fairly well in the front yard but get a lot of woods grasses and weeds growing with the grass. We don't have $1000s to spend but would really like to see some grass this year to cut down on the mud tracked in the house and to be able to walk outside barefoot. We are in So. central PA. I can get daffodils, bleeding heart, and a few other plants to grow in flower beds. Moss grows some places.
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
