Not virus. Perhaps a chewer? Working from underside of leaf?

Yeah, I know. No camera, no cell phone.

These were 2 new Anne plants from Raintree. Big, big rootballs, each with numerous new suckers. They got about 10" tall then started failing.

I've searched them and can't find any little critters. Snail damage wouldn't start around the entire leaf edge.

I've looked at online pix of various fungal and viral infections and nothing matches.

The only other thing I can think of is overwatering.

Both plants are essentially dead but I've got lots of Boysenberries, so I'll make do :-)
