Slugs: Do containers HAVE to be at soil level?

You know how people pour beer into dishes, dig a hole and put the dish so that the rim is like at soil level?

Do I have to do that? Can I just set the dish right on top of the soil while it's full of beer? Would it still work? The dish's edge is like 1-2 inches high.

The slugs need to be able to easily access the beer. If you think that your slugs will climb up the sides of your dish, then you don't need to bury it. The easier it is for the slugs, the more successful your baiting will be.
