What killed my squash plant?

The day before this picture was taken both these plants were healthy. The one on the right looks like it's been froze. Typical symptoms with the leaves looking totally wilted in the morning and then turning black later in the day. These plants are three feet apart. The temperature at the house was 50 degrees at 5:00 AM. There's no sign of insects. The only thing I can think of is that I live on what is called a Green Space that has a creek flowing through it. Could a pocket of cold air or frost from the stream hit one plant and not the other? That seems like a wild stretch to me. I've had this happen to my tomato plants in the past too. If anyone can figure this out I sure would appreciate it. It's been driving me crazy for years.

Thanks, Craig
