but the alternative is.. where did the stock come from.. and was it properly hardened off to sun and temps prior to planting???

if you took them out of the house .. straight to the sun ... the same could happen

Thanks for the reply. I started them in 2" pots in the house and in early May started putting them outside in full sunlight all day. They are each two plants actually. I know people say you don't need to start squash indoors this way but I do it so they are big enough that cut worms can't get them. They were a little stressed and prone to wilting when I first planted them and I had to water more than I expected. After about three days in the ground they seemed to be holding up pretty well and then it was about a week or two after planting, the one lost almost all it's leaves. I don't think it's totally dead and may live but certainly set way back. The thing is they were both treated exactly same as near as possible. This year isn't the worst. I have lost completely the squash and tomato plants in the past from this strange appearance of frost when the temperatures don't warrant it.

are they planted in plastic.. how hot did it get just prior to this??? .. do you think you had enough of a root system to offset the heat trapped by the plastic???

life is all in the growing points.. how do those look .. a little leaf sacrifice will mean nothing.. if it thrives and grows at the tips ...

A bit early for vine borers, but with the early spring most of the US had I'd look for a hole in the stem. Fusarium crown and foot rot may be another possibility.

They aren't planted in plastic. 80 degrees. There are a couple very small leaves growing at the top. The flowers still look good too.

No hole in the stem. I already checked that. No sign of insects. Do you think Fusarium crown or foot rot could cause sudden death overnight? Also, is it possible for a plant to recover from those diseases on it's own and start growing again?
