I think you are right Ken we only cut it to keep it neat as part of the hedge. We didn't cut it last year and it went wild. Still wild this year usually have it cut by now but it has been a long winter. It hasn't even leaved out yet.
This photo is taken from the bottom of a dead branch. Don't know how we missed that. hehe It was the easiest place to get a photo but the orange is on living branches as well as the trunk.

Looks like a jelly fungus. Lives on dead wood.
