they have tracked down newly planted plants.. and attacked them??? .. i dont think of grubs being so migratory ...

it would seem you ought to have noticed them when planting ...

I am in southern ct. The only reason I am quite sure of the problem is that my dad is a horticulture professor and when he was visiting last weekend I asked him why my spring veggies didn't look good. We went out and he tried to take a look at the roots of an onion that looked bad and there were almost no roots. He dug up a second one and as the soil fell away you could see the grubs right up in the roots just feasting. We tried to remove as many as we could but it is hard when things are already planted. There are probably 5 per square foot. My dad had never seen anything like it.

Anyway I am concerned this will just be a bad cycle. My dad is a turf specialist so the solutions he knows of are pretty nasty like dylox. I'm really hoping someone here may know of something that may be both effective and non-horrible. I already applied milkey spore but am told that can take years to kick in. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thx

The time to apply Milky Spore Disease, Bacillus popilleae, is August, to infect the grubs just after they hatch. The grubs you have now would be too big for MSD to be effective.
Parasitic nematodes might be effective now and another strain of Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus thuringiensis japonensis, may be effective against these grubs. Otherwise there is only the very broad spectrum poisons.
